Several school districts holding class on Memorial Day

Despite the fact that Memorial Day is a federal holiday designated to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives defending our freedom, several school districts in North and South Carolina are 'business as usual.'

Students and staff at Cleveland County School reported for school Monday morning

School leaders tell WBTV Memorial Day was designated as a snow make-up day. That decision, according to school leaders, was a made by a committee of school leaders, parents and teachers.

WBTV is also told that the school's calendars are determined years in advance. The school is required to designate make-up days.

A school spokesman said the calendar committee decided to preserve spring break and designate Memorial Day as a snow make-up day.

Students and staff in the Clover School District, in South Carolina, were also in class on Memorial Day.

The day is a make-up day from a snow day on February 14, WBTV has learned.

Lancaster County Schools was in session on Monday. It was scheduled to be a regular school day, according to the school calendar.

Lancaster County schools were open for Memorial Day last year, as well.

School leaders said the calendar made it impossible to give the students the day off.

David Knight, a spokesperson for the school district says since Lancaster County gets out earlier than most other school districts, they had to make sure they pack in their 180 instructional days.
