GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said what deputies initially told media was a bomb at the BMW plant turned out to be a water filtration device.
Wright said a large drum was found left behind a vehicle in Lot D of the west entrance off Brockman McClimon Road on Friday afternoon.
Deputies told FOX Carolina that they initially believed the drum contained a "chloride granulated bomb."
Wright said it was actually a filtration device that looked and smelled like a bomb.
The fire department spotted the device and reported it.
Public information officer Kevin Bobo said multiple fire departments, a hazmat team and other support responded to the scene.
Wright said the owner of the water filtration device forgot to tell security about it.
"During the two-hour investigation, BMW Team Members were kept at a safe distance away from the parking lot and traffic was diverted around the area. As a safety precaution, BMW delayed the start of its night shift at its Assembly Halls so all Team Members could enter and exit the west entrance parking lot safely once the situation was clear," BMW said in a statement.
BMW said the entire plant will resume normal schedule on Friday night.
