Carl Edwards will win the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday...according to a Concord-based octopus.

Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium held an event on Friday afternoon where an octopus was left with five choices on who would win this weekend's race.

The aquarium put in die-cast cars representing the top five NASCAR drivers in the point standings, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards.

Around 1:10 p.m., the octopus selected driver Carl Edwards to win the race. The octopus selected Edwards' car by wrapping herself around it.

"The Giant Pacific Octopus is a perfect creature to provide a competition prediction, as it is a highly intelligent creature," said David Cochran, Display Curator at Sea Life Charlotte-Concord. "Octopuses learn quickly and are even capable of opening jars and solving mazes."

An octopus in Germany correctly picked Spain to win the World Cup in 2010. That octopus correctly predicted 11 of 13 games.

Sea Life got into the social media realm with the hashtag #NASCAROctopus.

"Charlotte Motor Speedway is excited to partner with a neighboring attraction to bring a unique spin on such an iconic race," said Jonathan Coleman, Communications Manager for Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"It is the first time we have used a creature to predict a NASCAR race winner and we're excited to see if her pick wins."

The Coca-Cola 600 race will be held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord on Sunday, May 25.
