Asheville's Caleb Johnson is the winner of the 13th season of American Idol.
Johnson beat out 17-year-old Jena Irene, who is from the Detroit area, to be named American Idol and win a record contract.
During the final performance on Tuesday, Irene sang Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine, Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley and her single We Are One.
Johnson sang Dream On by Aerosmith, Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney and his single As Long As You Love Me.
The fate of the two contestants was then placed in the hands of the public, who voted online, through text message and over the phone.
Host Ryan Seacrest billed the battle for first place as "The Wild Card vs. the Wild Child."
During the finale on Wednesday, Johnson performed with the band KISS. His brother, Houston Johnson, was called onto the stage to meet his favorite band.
Irene got to perform with her favorite band Paramore.
The two-hour special also included performances by Jennifer Lopez, Darius Rucker, John Legend, American Idol winners from previous seasons and contestants who were eliminated earlier this season.
FOX Carolina's Jennifer Phillips was in Los Angeles for the finale and spoke with Caleb Johnson's family outside the Nokia Theater.
"It's amazing to see my brother out there performing with such an amazing band. It's crazy," said Houston Johnson.
Both Irene and Caleb Johnson were presented with 2015 Ford Mustangs during Thursday's show.
The winner was awarded an a recording contract.
