Two suspects in custody after firing shots at police, running into woods

Two people are in custody after Hickory police say they opened fire at officers and ran into the woods after crashing a stolen Jeep.

Residents in a Hickory neighborhood were being asked to stay indoors while police search the area. The all clear was given just before 8 a.m.

Hickory police spotted a stolen Jeep around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday along Highway 321 but the car sped off and police did not pursue it.

The car had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from the Raceway Gas Station on the 1200 block of Highway 321 NW. The victim told police that he had a 9mm handgun inside the SUV.

The car crashed on the 400 block of 17th Avenue NE a short time later and when officers walked up to it, two people opened fire on police and ran into the woods.

James Brandon Smith and Erin Olivia Shell are in custody.

Smith is charged with four counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked and hit and run causing property damage. Bond was set at $62,000.

Shell is charged with aiding and abetting and driving while license revoked. Her bond was set at $5,000.
