Broken pipe cause ceiling problems at high school in Matthews

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) -

Firefighters say issues with a ceiling at a high school in Matthews were due to a broken pipe and were not weather related.

Early Thursday morning, there were reports that part of a ceiling had collapsed in a classroom at David Butler High School.

A spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says the incident was reported around 8:30 a.m. Several ceiling tiles fell and water came into the room.

Firefighters say a pipe broke causing the leak and ceiling tiles to fall.

No injuries were reported and students were moved from that part of the building.

Still no word if the classroom will be in operation on Friday.

The Matthews Fire Department responded and the school system's building services team is working on repairing the ceiling.
