GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Drivers should expect delays near downtown Gaffney Wednesday morning after a freight train and a tractor-trailer collided.

The accident happened at the train crossing that runs parallel to Granard Street at East Rutherford Avenue about 6:30 a.m.

Authorities at the scene said the CR England Global Transportation tractor-trailer is a refrigerated truck, so crews are concerned the diesel could leak and are waiting on a wrecker to arrive.

Gaffney Fire Chief Jamie Caggiano said the grade of the railroad tracks at the crossing is particularly high while the truck's landing gear was a little low, causing it to get struck on the tracks.

He said the train was headed below the speed limit at about 28 mph, so it allowed the train to stop quicker. He said three people were in the truck, but no one was injured in the crash.

The Highway Patrol said drivers can cross over the tracks using the T bridge at Montgomery Street and along Corry Street/SC 105 to avoid the backup. Drivers should expect delays and detours while crews work to investigate the accident and get the train moving again.

Caggiano said Norfolk Southern engineers are enroute and until they arrive, they cannot tow away the tractor-trailer.

Authorities said they expect it to take at least two hours to clear the accident scene and get the train moving again.
