Hello everyone, this is Paul Cameron in the WBTV Newsroom. Busy night. A Lenoir-Rhyne college student drowned in Lake Hickory. Friends say he was jumping off rocks to celebrate the end of the semester. He didn't resurface and a dive team found his body tonight.
Violent video into the newsroom tonight of a house exploding on live television. The TV news crews were watching by helicopter when the blast happened. They were on scene after there were reports someone was shooting at an officer. At this point, we don't know how those two events are connected.
A teenager was caught just before police say he was about to murder his former friend over a girl. The Lancaster County Sheriff's got a tip, then pulled over Joey Hegler at a traffic stop. He was wearing rubber gloves at the time. Friends say when Hegler broke up with his girlfriend, he started using drugs again. Reporter Coleen Harry spoke with the intended victim's father tonight.
Also tonight, Duke Energy has begun cleanup of the coal ash spilled into the Dan River. It's expected to take a month to vacuum out the 2,500 tons of toxic coal ash.
