TN man rescued by federal agents in NC after being kidnapped in Knoxville

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Tennessee man was rescued in the North Carolina mountains Thursday morning and another man was arrested in his kidnapping.

Dennis Smith, 53, was taken into custody and is awaiting an initial appearance in federal court, according to the FBI.

The initial call came in on Wednesday afternoon to a report of a break-in in Knoxville , Tennessee but quickly turned into a kidnapping case.

Smith and the victim, whose name has not been released, ended up across the state line in North Carolina.

Federal agents with the FBI worked with Knoxville police, deputies from the McDowell Co. Sheriff's Office, Marion police, troopers from the NC Highway Patrol and the McDowell County Office of Emergency Management to rescue the victim at a rest stop off of Interstate 40 near Marion at 6:40 a.m.

Smith will be extradited back to federal court in Tennessee to face charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
