When a privacy policy on email means no privacy

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Many of our favorite, free email programs are not private.

Our cyber expert says it really is happening across all email applications and it is buried in the privacy policies.

Look closely at the privacy policy of your email provider.  What does it say?

Cyber expert Theresa Payton offers her thoughts and advice below:

Law enforcement:  they need a warrant to read your email but email providers do not - they can peek all they want

1.  A techie option:  You can use end to end encryption such as Cryptocat or GnuPG

2.  Switch over to email accounts that protect privacy, for example, Hushmail or VaultletMail

3.  If you like your email account or don't have time to switch, some browser extensions will help grab back some privacy

Example: Enigmail
