YouTube videos lead to student smacking classmate, charged with assault

A new prank game that's going viral on the internet has a York Middle School student facing assault charges.

A 7th grade York Middle student was the victim of the prank game called "smack" or "slap cam", it's being popularized on YouTube and other social media sites.

"The little boy called her name and said slap cam," said the mother of the victim.

"Getting a call from the school, I'm just like what's going on? So she called and said mom, I just got slapped," she continued.

According to police reports, a 12-year-old male student slapped the 7th grader and left her lip busted and swollen.

The suspect told police he didn't mean to hurt the victim and he got the idea from YouTube videos.

In the videos, people record others getting slapped unexpectedly for a quick laugh.

The victim's mother says it's no laughing matter and while her daughter is healing physically, the prank has shaken the young girl emotionally.

"My daughter flinches when someone comes close to her. They can wave and she'll flinch, thinking that it will occur again," said the mother.

The 12-year-old was arrested on 3rd degree assault and battery charges.

The mother of the victim says it's a tough lesson for the suspect, but she hopes children and parents will learn from her daughter's story.

"Parents need to know what's going on and they need to let their children know not to slap people, don't touch other people and don't come in their personal space."

WBTV reached out to York school officials for a comment.

Officials say this was an isolated incident and the student is facing disciplinary action. They would not give specifics on what those disciplinary actions are.

The case has been referred to family court in York County.
