McCrory proposes UNC scholarships for veterans

Gov. Pat McCrory is calling for a scholarship program that gives newly discharged veterans in-state tuition to schools in the University of North Carolina system.

Under McCrory's plan, veterans within two years of discharge would receive a minimum scholarship of $7,500.

To qualify, a veteran would need to have served at least four years, part of which at a North Carolina military facility, and earned an honorable discharge.

Recipients must reside in North Carolina at the time of enrollment, but have yet to qualify for in-state residency.

The scholarship is limited to two semesters since recipients are expected to establish residency after one year of coursework.

Scholarship funding for the 2015-16 academic year will come from the North Carolina Education Lottery. The scholarships are expected to cost $5 million.
