A police search is continuing in Henrico's West End, where police are tracking at least two suspects whom they believe are linked to an armed carjacking and bank robbery.
An armed man forced an Arby's customer out of her car, on Quioccasin Road, according to an employee at the restaurant. The workers says the victim reported the suspect walked up to the her car while she was sitting in it, and flashed a gun. The suspect took off with the woman's Toyota.
Within 20 minutes, the Franklin Federal Savings Bank in the Village SHopping Center, was raided by a gunman. Police say the suspect wore a medical mask and made off with an undisclosed amount of money. Police say they received reports of another person driving the car, matching the same description as the car which was stolen from Arby's.
Two nearby private schools, St. Catherine's and St. Christopher's, went into lockdown. Alexander More, a fourth-grader at St. Christopher's School, says an alarm sounded off while he was on the playground.
"When I heard it was not a drill, I was freaked out," said More.
More says teachers took students into the safest room they could find, inside the building. "We went to the nearest place we could…away from windows," continued More.
Investigators, K-9 units, and police helicopters scoured the scene at the bank.
Jessica Shook works across the street from the Village Shopping Center. Shook posted pictures of the action, after her building also went into lockdown.
"I heard a lot of police activity, and sirens, and a lot of fast moving cars…a plane overhead," listed Shook.
WIthin the hour after the bank robbery, the stolen car was abandoned by Stuart and Ripley Avenues, in a neighborhood nearby. Neighbor Jay McNamara tweeted NBC12 real-time pictures, as police searched his block.
"(Police) brought the dogs in and out...(Investigators) were running up and down the neighborhood here, and in the back alleys behind us," described McNamara.
However, police were only able to secure the stolen car. The suspects are still at large.
Police say the victim of that carjacking wasn't hurt. She was able to pick her car up several hours later.
Suspects in both incidents have a similar, though vague, description. The carjacking suspect is described as a black male in his late teens to early 20s wearing a gray shirt and using a small handgun. The bank robbery suspect is described as a black male with a medical mask covering his face. He was wearing a zip-up hoodie and also was armed with a gun.
Just last year, Moe's Southwest Grill, next door to the bank, was held up at gunpoint.
Anyone with information on the case should call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
