CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A man charged with rape who police say cut and run was arrested Monday evening.

According the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, 28-year old Eddie Stokley cut his ankle monitor Saturday night and hit the road, prompting a manhunt.

According to Stokley's father, he was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Earlier that day, Officer Adrian Johnson said investigators were actively searching for him.

"Usually it will be up to two to three days. I'm pretty confident we'll catch up with him," Johnson said.

It was in the backyard of 1400 Bethel road that CMPD found Stokley's ankle bracelet.

"He was nowhere to be found after recovering the monitor," Johnson said.

Currently there are 385 offenders wearing monitoring devices in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County.

"A lot of them are violent. The majority of them are violent," Johnson said Five of them, including Stokley, are facing rape charges. So the question is why were they ever released?

"When Mr. Stokley was arrested he was given a bond. When offenders make bond, they're out,"  Johnson said.

CMPD was searching with a little help from Stokley's father, who said he was telling police everything he knew.

"If he gets cornered, there's no telling what he may do," the man said.

He believes the safest place for his son is behind bars. "I'd rather him be off the street, then to find him dead somewhere."

When he was apprehended, his sex crime charges weren't the only ones he was facing. He'll also be charged for tampering with his monitoring device.
