Neighbor attempts to save elderly couple from fatal Kannapolis fire

Posted: Updated:

Terry Davis woke up to his dog barking around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning. He didn't have to look out of the window of his Kannapolis home to realize his neighbors home was on fire. He immediately ran outside to try and get them to safety.

"I grabbed the phone and dialed 911," said Davis. "Then I ran outside and tried to kick the door in to get in to them but I couldn't get the door open."

Davis says his neighbors lived in the home next door for 25+ years and are elderly.

When he saw the fire coming though the living room window he said he knew they wouldn't be able to get out of the home by themselves.

"So I grabbed the hose and started spraying the window to try and knock down the fire until more help got here," said Davis.

More help was on the way to N. Ridge Avenue in Kannapolis. The Fire Department showed up and pulled the couple from the burning home. Both were unconscious.

EMS crews on scene pronounced the husband dead on the scene.

"You're disgusted," said Davis, reflecting on not being able to get inside of the house before firefighters arrived. "You're fighting trying to safe them, fighting trying to get to them and you know they can't help themselves... That's a helpless feeling."

The elderly man's wife was revived on scene and taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast for treatment but she later died, officials say.

Right now, fire investigators are looking for a cause of the fire.
