Fund set up for family of Richmond boy killed protecting sister

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A memorial fund has been set up for the family of a Richmond boy who was killed trying to protect his sister from a rapist.

Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank branch by asking for the Keys For Marty Foundation. Family members say 8-year-old Marty Cobb always loved to play with keys.

Family members and friends say Marty and his sister were playing on the train tracks in the 200 block of Brandon Road, not far from their home Thursday evening. Police say the suspect sexually assaulted the girl and, when Marty tried to intervene, beat the boy to death.

Richmond Police have a warrant for the arrest of a teen in connection with the boy's death and his sister's rape.

Police say the teen killed 8-year-old Martin Cobb when he tried to stop the suspect from raping his 12-year-old sister.

Sources say the teen is being evaluated at the Tucker Pavilion at Chippenham Medical Center.

Initially, the suspect was described as a white male with scraggly facial hair. Now police say the suspect, a teenage black male, threatened the victim into giving false information. No other details have been released at this time.

Family members say both children were students at Elizabeth Redd Elementary school. The boy who was killed was in first grade. His sister was in fifth grade.

vigil will be held for the boy on Saturday.

    Henrico police are asking for the public's help in finding a missing person who is considered endangered. Kevin William Cannelli, 46, was last seen on July 18.
