New Hanover candidates report fundraising numbers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One candidate for New Hanover County Commission has far outraised his competitors, according to reports that detail fundraising figures through April 19. 

Plastic surgeon Chuck Kays raised $40,558, most of that coming from other doctors and people who work in health fields. 

Other county commission candidates who raised more than $10,000 were: Skip Watkins, $22,669; Rob Zapple, $17,596; and Derrick Hickey, $10,694. 

Sheriff 

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon raised $41,985. His opponent in the Democrat primary, Sid Causey, reported $29,905. 

In the Republican primary for sheriff, Jason Vaughn took in $11,895.94, and Marc Benson raised $4,550. 

School Board 

The eight candidates for school board raised just over $12,000 in all. Jim Brumit was the top fundraiser, taking in $6,033.  

Other school board candidates who raised more than $1,000 were: Bruce Shell, $2,801; Tom Gale, $1,298; and Ed Higgins, $1,208.
