CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A woman was taken to the hospital after jumping from a moving vehicle at Northlake Mall Thursday.

The incident happened at the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Northlake Mall Drive around 12 p.m.

Charlotte Police told WBTV that the car the woman was in was being stopped because of a marijuana odor emanating from the vehicle as it went through the drive-thru.

Officers were already on the property conducting their annual Cop on Top charity fund collection for the Special Olympics.

When those officers asked the driver to stop because of the odor, the driver attempted to drive away, but was stopped at the entrance to the restaurant parking lot by several NC State Troopers who were, by happenstance, arriving there for lunch.

The female passenger then jumped from the vehicle before it came to a stop and was injured.

Medic arrived at the scene and took the woman to Carolinas Medical Center. She is expected to be okay.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene for possession of marijuana.
