CONNELLY SPRINGS, NC (WBTV) -

A former North Carolina town clerk was convicted of embezzlement after using town funds for personal use.

Jeanine Anette Barus, 61, was the town clerk in Connelly Springs for over seven years.

During that time she paid for personal items including groceries, Duke Energy and Charter Communication bill payments, and other household goods using credit cards and charge accounts in the name of the Town of Connelly Springs.

Officials say the goods and services came to a total of approximately $25,000 in town funds.

Barus was sentenced to a suspended sentence between six and 17 months and placed on a supervised probation period of 36 months.

She was also ordered to pay a restitution of the entire $25,000, with $15,000 to be paid immediately.
