American Red Cross urges people to prepare for severe storms

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

At the American Red Cross in Charlotte, they are ready to help people in the event of a tornado or flooding. Trailers are all packed up with items that can support a shelter. They haven't opened up shelters yet, but they are looking for places that have generators in case of loss of electricity.

Inside the Red Cross they have everything to help people who experience a disaster, water, comfort kits and flashlights. They've been monitoring the storms and say our area is likely to experience flooding due to 3 to 5 inches of rain.

Supplies are ready and volunteers are on standby. But volunteers say they don't step in until the worst has happened. In the mean time, you can prepare yourself by getting a kit ready, that includes phone numbers of people written down, medications and supplies for pets.

"Be prepared. We've seen in the past that the government doesn't get there as fast as we would like them to get there. So we have to be prepared to take care of ourselves," said Disaster Services Chairman, Pam Brynarsky of the American Red Cross Greater Carolina Chapter, "That means you need to have some food, some water, some items set aside so that you can take care of yourself for at least three days."

Their other suggestion is to be informed.

There are plenty of apps that you can download to your phone that will wake you if severe storms strike when you are sleeping. The Red Cross apps are available by going to redcross.org/mobile apps or dialing **redcross on your phone.
