SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - Police identified the victims in the deadly Saturday afternoon crash in Shelby.

Police identified the deceased victims in the crash as 55-year-old Dorman Keith Pompey and 55-year-old Frances Parks Pompey of Lawndale, North Carolina.

Police said a Shelby police officer was monitoring traffic on Dixon Boulevard just after 1:00 p.m. for speeding when a 2002 Buick Lesabre passed by the officer speeding.

Chief of Police Jeffrey H. Ledford said the officer tried to pull over 34-year-old Demetrist Lendell Roberts when he made a left turn onto Marion Street in order to flee from the officer.

When the officer turned onto Marion street, the Roberts pulled away. Police said when the officer tried catching up to Roberts, the pursuit was called off due to traffic.

Shortly after the chase, the Roberts ran a red light at the intersection of Marion Street and Lafayette Street and struck a 2007 Ford Taurus in the passenger door.

Police said Dorman and Frances were in the Ford Taurus and was pronounced dead on the scene and one child was ejected from the car.

Dorman and Frances were married and were the grandparents of the child hurt in the crash.

Police said the grandson is at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Police have not released the extent of the child's injuries.

Names of the victim are not being released until the family is notified.
Roberts will be charged with two counts of second degree murder,  two counts of felony death By vehicle, driving while impaired, felony speed to elude arrest,  driving while license revoked, and speeding.
