FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville police arrested the grandfather of a 7-year-old boy who was killed in an accidental shooting Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call concerning a child being shot in a residence at 2101 Hyde Place in the Colony Place Apartment complex around 4:15 p.m., police said.

The boy, identified as Jaylean Richardson, was in a rear room of the residence when a gun was fired, police said.

Jaylean Richardson’s grandfather David Nathaniel Richardson was in the home at the time of the incident, Fayetteville authorities said.

Fayetteville police said Jaylean Richardson was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

An investigation by Fayetteville police determined the shooting was accidental. David Richardson was charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to secure a firearm, police said.

David Richardson was sent to the Cumberland County Detention Center where he received a $6,000 secured bond.
