Students gathered to remember Maren Sanchez, who was fatally stabbed by a student at the Jonathan Law High School in Milford Friday morning.
Friday night was scheduled to be the junior prom, but because of this horrible tragedy, students' excitement has turned to grief.
Eyewitness News obtained a picture of Sanchez in a prom dress. It was a night she had undoubtedly been looking forward to for months.
Eyewitness News spoke to Sanchez's friends outside the school Friday morning.
"I guess they were meeting under the staircase to talk about what happened. He asked her to prom and she says no I have a new boyfriend and he strangled," said one friend, who wished not to be identified.
Shock and grief came over them when they found out Sanchez didn't make it.
"I think it's crazy that someone would throw their life away over something like that," the friend said.
School leaders said Sanchez was a popular junior at Jonathan Law High School. An exceptional student, according to school officials, that was a member of the National Honor Society. She was an athlete, who played on the tennis team.
Sanchez was very active in drama. Eyewitness News obtained a Youtube video of Sanchez performing on stage.
"Know you're not alone, I'm going to make this place your home," Sanchez sang.
Phillip Phillips, who is the American Idol winner that sang Home, tweeted about the stabbing.
"I am so sad to hear of the tragic death of Maren Sanchez. My thoughts and prayers are with her family," Phillip Phillips tweeted.
There are already plans to memorialize Sanchez in the works.
Jonathan Law High School students attended a candlelight vigil held in Sanchez's honor at Walnut Beach, the student newspaper, The Advocate, tweeted. Sanchez's family told the newspaper to wear tuxes and prom dresses to the vigil.
Instead of prom Friday night, grief counselors will be on hand for anyone who needs it. They will be available on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
