1 charged after employee fires shots in front of Charlotte business


SWAT was called to a situation in east Charlotte after an employee reportedly fired a gun at a business.

Police said they have charged Ahmed Anwar Ismail, 33, for his involved in the case.

Detectives charged Ismail with discharging a firearm within the city limits, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. at the Super Lube near the intersection of Eastway Drive and Central Avenue after police say an employee fired a rifle in front of the business.

SWAT was called to the scene and set up a perimeter around the business. Eastway Drive was shut down around the scene.

Police had guns drawn as they attempted to talk to someone over a megaphone. Officials said it was not clear at the time if any victims or a potential gunmen were in the business.

SWAT crews then worked their way into the Super Lube and found the building to be empty.

Officers then cleared the scene, but told WBTV that the investigation was ongoing and that charges were possible.

Nearby Merry Oaks International Academy was put on lockdown due to the situation, according to Charlotte Mecklenburg School officials. The lockdown was lifted at 2:56 p.m.
