A Hudson woman has been charged in Monday's stabbing death of her husband and authorities say it's not the first time she has been in trouble with the law.

Donna Thomas Harris, 54, was sent to prison in 2004 for the shooting death of a man believed to be her boyfriend at the time. She was convicted of manslaughter and spent 6 years behind bars.

She has also been convicted of DUI and larceny.

Police say the apartment where she lived with her husband William Daniel Harris had been the scene of several domestic violence situations in recent months.

"We have gone there on numerous occasions, making arrests and sometimes sending one to the hospital," said Hudson Police Chief Andy Day. "They kept getting back together, though."

Neighbors said they could hear arguing almost daily from the apartment where the Harris couple lived.

"Apart, they were good people but when they got together it was no good," said Robert Fueston who said he was the apartment complex manager.

On Monday, the two were arguing again. Afterwards, William Harris was seen staggering up the hillside towards another apartment building.

"I knew something was wrong," said neighbor Candace Cooke.

Harris knocked on one door, then went to another where Robin Worman answered.

"He said call 911, I've been stabbed," said Worman.

She says Harris was bleeding from a chest wound and had cuts on his hand. Neighbors gathered to help and asked Harris what happened.

"He said he was stabbed by his wife, Donna," said Tony Stout.

Donna locked herself in the apartment and did not come out until police obtained a warrant and broke their way in about an hour later.

By that time, William Harris had been pronounced dead at the local hospital.

"He just lost too much blood," said Worman.

Donna Harris is now charged with murder and is in the Caldwell County Jail without bond.

A first appearance is set for Thursday in District Court in Lenoir.

"It's a sad situation for sure," said Worman.

Chief Day said it was something that didn't have to happen. People in domestic violence situations need to take action, he said.

"If you find yourself in a violent or potentially violent situation you must get away, get out,' he said.
