YORK, SC (WBTV) -

The mayor of York says state law enforcement officials are investigating the city's police chief.

York Mayor J. Edward Lee told WBTV the investigation involves York Police Chief Andy Robinson.

WBTV reached out to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Coordinator Thom Berry about the investigation.

Berry says he can only confirm that SLED is "investigating allegations involving the York Police Department."

Berry couldn't confirm that the investigation specifically involved Chief Robinson. He was also unable to say when the investigation began.

Mayor Lee told WBTV that he was informed about the investigation by York City Manager Charles Helms. It's not clearly specifically what the allegations are.

Helms told WBTV he had "no comment at this time" when WBTV asked about the investigation.

WBTV has also reached out to Chief Robinson about the allegations, but have been unable to reach him for comment.

Chief Robinson was selected as the US Attorney's Office Strom Thurmond Excellence in Law Enforcement Award Recipient for SC Municipal Officer of the Year in 2013.

The award is the highest recognition for law enforcement officers in South Carolina.
