CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Two young crooks spot a golden opportunity to rob a man while he's using a restroom.
It happened at the Bojangles on The Plaza.
Surveillance video shows people at 7:30 p.m. getting their dinner on a Sunday night.
At the order counter, a young man in a white pullover steps out of the way to let an older man in a cap and mustache give his order to the clerk.
While that customer pays for his food, another young man in a green hooded pullover enters the restaurant. When the customer decides to use the restroom while his meal is being prepared, the two hooded men follow him in.
One puts a gun to the victim's back, threatening to shoot. The other pilfers his pockets.
"It was a total surprise," said CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson. "When you think about it, it could happen to any of us because as you go into the restroom a lot of times you've got your back to the door."
In less than two minutes, hooded men have the victim's cash and cell phone. We see them leaving quickly.
According to police, a restroom robbery is rare. "In all the years we've been doing this, it's the first case I know of that has happened inside a bathroom."
Moments later, the victim appears, leaning over the counter to say he'd just been robbed.
"Even the employees inside working, they knew nothing about what was going on. When he came out and told them what happened, they were in shock."
If you were in or around that fast food joint on Sunday, March 30th, call Crime Stoppers (704) 334-1600 to tell them what you know. That information could lead to a nice payday and you won't have to leave your name.
