Man charged with murder after man found dead in Charlotte home

A man has been arrested in connection to a homicide investigation that began when a man was found dead inside a south Charlotte home with homemade explosives, according to Charlotte Police.

Douglas Allen Hoyt, 41, was arrested on April 11 and charged with murder after voluntarily going to police headquarters to speak to detectives on the case.

The investigation began just before 3 p.m. on March 17 when 65-year-old Alva Richard Brewer was found dead inside his home on Sharon Amity Road by an acquaintance.

Police said during a routine search of the home, detectives found suspicious items that appeared to be homemade explosives.

Nearby residents were evacuated for safety and the Bomb Squad responded to the scene, on two separate occasions, and rendered the devices safe.

The next day, the Medical Examiner's Office ruled Brewer's death a homicide. Officials have not released the cause of death.

During the investigation, Hoyt was developed as a potential suspect and was arrested.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak to a homicide detective or Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
