CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Opponents are lining up against a proposal in Congress that could mean a major change in the size of trucks allowed on the nation's highways.

A transportation committee is looking at a plan that would allow triple tandem trailers, lengthen other trailers and added 8 tons or more to the allowable weight of some trucks.

"People shouldn't be afraid of it, said trucker Brad Smith. "We are professionals and we can handle it."

But Officials from more than a dozen states are lobbying congress not to allow the changes. The North Carolina State Troopers Association believes it will mean more serious accidents.

Congress is awaiting a study by the U.S. Department of Transportation bed fore taking any action. That study could be finished in a matter of weeks.

Lu Simms, who lives in Colorado where triple trailers already are allowed said it is scary driving alongside one of therm and hopes Congress says no to the idea.

"Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should," she said.
