SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A well known local man has died while visiting South Africa.
Charles "Charlie" Deadwyler died on Sunday in Johannesburg after an illness of several days.
Deadwyler was on a UNC alumni trip when he became ill and then passed away in a hospital. His wife Mandy was with him on the trip.
Deadwyler was known as the owner of Towne Pharmacy, 1408 W. Innes Street. He was also an active member of the Salisbury Kiwanis Club, and was also well known for his devotion to his beloved UNC Tar Heels.
Deadwyler was a past president and member of the Kiwanis Club of Salisbury for 23 years.
As word spread about Deadwyler's unexpected death on Sunday, many who knew him took to social media to talk about the loss.
"This is so sad. Charles will be missed greatly," Gale Cansler wrote. "Our heart and prayers go out to his family."
"We are shocked, this is so sad. Charles was always so nice and a joy to be around. Thoughts and prayers to his family," wrote Christine Tate.
"So sad to hear this news. Both of my children worked for Charlie during their high school years. He and Mandy were so good to them. Will pray for the family," Wrote Donna Stringfield.
