Reds lose in Cardinals home opener 5-3

Reds killer Yadi Molina hit a three-run first inning double and the Cardinals beat the Reds in the St. Louis home opener, 5-3.

Starting pitcher Tony Cingrani only lasted 4 innings and took his first loss of the season.

The Reds actually out hit the Cardinals (10-9), but a 9th inning rally fell short when Billy Hamilton flied out with the tying run on first base.

"We're running our guys out there," said manager Bryan Price on the TV broadcast about the struggling offense. 

"The core guys that we know are going to be in our line-up, almost every day, I continue to run them out there.  These are the guys that when the season's over, they're going to have their numbers, they're going to be the performers that we know that they are and, right now, we've struggled to do anything with runners in scoring position," Price said.

Reds catcher Brayan Pena had three hits and raised his team leading (amongst regular starters) on base percentage to .450. 

Billy Hamilton doubled in the first inning for his first hit of the season, but was thrown out between third base and home plate trying to score on a Joey Votto ground ball to first base.

The Reds drop to 2-5 on the season and play St. Louis in game two of a three game series Tuesday in St. Louis.

    The remains of a Rowan County soldier who vanished during World War II have been found and are being brought home this week for burial in his hometown of Gold Hill, 60 miles northeast of Charlotte.
