LINCOLNTON, NC (WBTV) -

A search is underway in Lincoln County for a man that investigators say took a bag of money from the Denver Walmart early Monday morning.

Around 2:55 a.m. a Walmart employee was walking back to the cash register from a break when she noticed a black male crouched down near a register that is rarely used, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

As she walked closer the man was kneeling and pretending to be looking at the candy rack.

When the employee got near the register she noticed the drawer had been popped open.

The man then ran out of the store with a money bag and was followed by several store employees.

Deputies say the man used a pry bar to open the register drawer and take the money.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a ball cap, black or navy blue sweatshirt and khaki pants.

He fled the scene in a black Nissan Altima with license plates on the front and back of the vehicle.

Detectives say the robbery is similar to another that occurred at a Walmart in the University area of Charlotte a few hours before the Denver robbery.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Detective Thomas Laverde at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050 or the Lincoln County Communications Center at 704-735-8202.
