CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

One person was killed and another injured in a car accident in southwest Charlotte Tuesday evening.

The wreck happened near the intersection of Tryon Street and Tyvola Road in southwest Charlotte around 8:30 p.m.

Police confirmed to WBTV that 39-year-old Ramez Ahmed Shams Eldin, was killed in the crash, and 50-year-old Michael Perrella was taken to an area hospital.

Police say Perrella was speeding and hit Eldin's Jeep from the rear with his Ford Expedition, causing both to spin out of control.

Perrella's vehicle crossed across the northbound lanes and hit a telephone pole. Eldin's Jeep came to rest on the sidewalk.

Police say speed and impairment are factors in the crash.

Perrella is charged with driving while impaired and a warrant for felony death by motor vehicle has been issued.

The investigation is ongoing.

Tryon Street was closed while emergency crews worked the scene.
