Concern over Union County school district's budget

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

There is concern over Union County Public school district's 2014-15 budget. It hasn't been presented yet but school board member Sherry Hodges is already voicing her opinion.

Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis is prepared to present a $71 million budget request to the county to pay for capital needs throughout the school district.

Hodges thinks that may not be a wise decision. The school district sued the county because officials thought the district didn't get enough money. A jury sided with the school district and told the county to pay the school district $91 million dollars.

The county is appealing that decision. Hodges believes asking for $71 million from the county may cause more conflict since the county refuses to pay up. Hodges says she wants this budget to be a successful one.

The superintendent responded by saying she is asking for $71 million to let county leaders know the school district's needs.

After the superintendent presents her budget, school board members can adjust the numbers.
