(WMC-TV) – The trial against a suspected roadside killer started Monday. James Willie is charged with shooting and killing two people along North Mississippi highways in 2012.

In May 2012, Thomas Schlender of Nebraska was found shot in his car in the median of Interstate 55 in Panola County near Pope.

Days later, Lori Ann Corswell of Hernando was found shot in her car along the shoulder of Mississippi Highway 713 near Interstate 69 in Tunica County. She was a casino worker on her way home from work when investigators say Willie shot and killed her in an apparent robbery.

Investigators later arrested James Willie on an unrelated rape charge.

A gun and bullet casing belonging to Willie were found to match the evidence in the roadside killings.

Investigators believe robbery was the motive behind both shootings.

Jury selection started at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Twelve men and women from Tunica will begin hearing testimony Tuesday. The jury will be sequestered throughout this process.

The trial is expected to last all week.

Willie faces a charge for capital murder in Panola County. That case is expected to be heard later this summer.
