A teenage girl on Saturday was fatally shot in Avondale. A 14-year-old boy has been charged in the incident.

Authorities responded to 3522 Reading Road around 3:30 p.m. Captain Mike Neville of District Four said upon arrival they found 14-year-old Tyan Adkins shot inside a second-floor apartment.

Adkins was transported to Children's Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

A 14-year-old boy was taken in to custody and charged with Having Weapons Under Disability and Reckless Homicide.

Shalena McPherson, who claims to be the aunt of the shooter, told FOX19's Gordon Graham that the shooting was an accident.

"He turned himself in and it was a mistake. He was playing with a gun, Yes, that is true, but he didn't mean to do this."

McPherson said that her nephew was unaware that a bullet was in the chamber when the gun fired.

Police have not confirmed McPherson's claims. They said investigations are ongoing and are releasing few other details at this time.
