Livingstone College’s Social Work Department, under the leadership of Chairman Dr. Timothy C. Okeke, has been reaffirmed for accreditation until 2022 by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation.

The reaffirmation follows the addition of three social work courses to Livingstone College’s Evening and Weekend Program.

Social Work is one of the more popular majors at Livingstone, and during 2013 Commencement Exercises, 19 students obtained bachelor’s degrees in social work. Currently, the College has 80 students majoring in social work, and several of them are in the process of obtaining internships at various agencies and organizations in Salisbury and Rowan County.

“In today’s society when, unfortunately, many families are fragmented and the job market continues lagging, social workers are becoming increasingly more important,” said President Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr. “Our social work department continues making great strides toward preparing students for the vital work they’re going to be performing after they graduate. I am confident the numbers of students choosing to major in social work here at Livingstone College will continue growing, and also that the department will continue adequately preparing them for the noble profession.”

Recently, seven social work students were inducted into the Lambda Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society. To become a member, students must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA. And many of Livingstone’s social work graduates go on to obtain master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s in social work, according to Okeke.
