Airport to build road to connect I-85 directly to airport terminal

Charlotte City Council approved $75,000 at its meeting last night as part of a $2 million contract that will create a continuous entrance road from Interstate 85 at the Little Rock Road exit all the way to the airport terminal at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

The contract was originally awarded in 2011 but was amended because the airport wanted to purchase the land to finish the road extension itself since NCDOT was facing funding constraints and had to delay the project, according to the release from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

The Aviation Department will acquire the property from NCDOT and complete the north portion in order to provide customers with the direct access to the entrance road from I-85 when the new road opens.

Completing the design now will allow Aviation to solicit bids for and complete the northern portion construction to coincide with the opening of the southern portion, according to the release.

The final result will be a continuous entrance road from the I-85 Little Rock Rd. exit to the terminal.

The City Council approved a contract amendment #3 for $75,000  to HNTB North Carolina, P.C. for additional design services to the Airport Entrance Road.
