Cold air returns to region today, deep freeze in store overnight

Posted: Updated:

It's back to Winter Tuesday, says WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin.

Most schools in the mountains are closed or delayed Tuesday, due to snow that continues to fall.

With cold weather in place, wet snow in High Country today will accumulate two to four inches above 3,500 feet.

Outside of the mountains, the precipitation will be mainly rain, but there may be a bit of a wet snow in the northern foothills this morning, as temperatures there will be close to 32 degrees.

In Charlotte and across the Piedmont, cold rain showers are in the forecast through the afternoon Tuesday along with gusty winds.

Highs for the day will barely reach 50 degrees in the Charlotte area, cold 40s across the foothills.

Sunshine returns for Wednesday, but temps will stay cold.

A hard freeze in the low to mid 20s is expected Wednesday morning and afternoon readings will struggle to get back to 50 degrees.  Protect those plants!

We'll warm up to the upper 60s by Friday, but showers and thunderstorms are possible for the end of the work week and first half of the weekend.
