Students compete in Sodexo Future Chef Challenge

Six students from the Beaufort County School District put on their chef's cap Monday for the 2014 Sodexo Future Chef Challenge.

This year's competition centered on sandwiches, and the six finalists offered their creations to a panel of judges who picked a winner.

Points were awarded based on the recipe's originality, taste, healthy attributes, plate presentation, ease of preparation and kid-friendliness.

"For me, it's really nice to see the future generation of chefs," said judge Eric Sayers. "I always think it's part of a chef's creed to help teach and grow other people and help get them into the chef world. It's really neat, it's really satisfying to see the younger generation come up."

Jacob Himes from Okatie Elementary took the top prize for his corn, chicken and black bean wrap.
