Novant Health plans $60 million heart and cancer facility

No cancer patient wants a trip to the emergency room, where the wait can be long and germs can be risky for a compromised immune system.

But emergencies happen.

Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center hopes more patients can avoid those ER trips in the future. The hospital announced its plan to build a $60 million dollar comprehensive cancer and heart outpatient center across from the main hospital campus in Elizabeth.

One of the features would be an urgent care where cancer patients could bypass the ER.

The facility would help streamline the journey after diagnosis. It would offer cancer clinics, heart and vascular clinics, rehabilitation and wellness services, research and clinical trials, an infusion center, chapel and cafe.

"It's easier for the patients, and the staff as well, so it's a very awesome thing," said Leigh Poplin who came to the announcement ceremony.

She suffered a traumatic cardiac event 11 days after the birth of her son last year. She had a blood clot, which led to a torn artery and immediate open heart surgery.

"Because of Novant Presby, I am here today," said Poplin. She teared up thinking about where she was a year ago and how excellent medical saved her life.

She's excited for the patients who will benefit from the new facility. She knows their journey all too well and will always be a heart patient herself.

The building should be complete in 2017.
