Chilly temps return this week, stormy weekend in store?

Sunny skies are in the forecast for Monday, but we'll likely top out in the low 50s, more than 10 degrees below average for this time of year, says WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin.

Dry and cold conditions for Monday tonight with lows bottoming out in the low to mid 30s across the Piedmont, colder 20s in the mountains, where snow may break out late, Conklin says.

With cold weather in place, wet snow will continue in the mountains early Tuesday morning, perhaps accumulating a few inches above 3,500 feet.

Outside of the mountains, there may be a bit of a wintry mix in the northern foothills, as temperatures there fall to near 32 degrees at daybreak Tuesday.

In Charlotte and across the Piedmont, cold rain showers look fairly likely from mid morning through the afternoon Tuesday along with gusty winds.

Sunshine returns for Wednesday, but temps will stay very cold.

A hard freeze in the low to mid 20s is expected Wednesday morning and afternoon readings aren't likely to make it much above 50 degrees.

We'll warm up to the upper 60s by Friday, but showers and thunderstorms are possible for the end of the work week and first half of the weekend.
