One of the Zoo's last living original members, a Caribbean flamingo, died.
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -
The last remaining animal of Riverbanks Zoo original animal collection has died, according to zoo officials.
A 45-year-old Caribbean flamingo, one of ten of the birds that arrived at the zoo in September 1973, was identified as the deceased animal.
Zoo officials said she was a productive member of the flock and had her last chick in 2009.
"It's always hard to lose a member of our animal collection, especially one that has been with us since day one," said zoo President and CEO Satch Krantz. "We know that this flamingo was at least 45 years old at the time of her death which largely exceeds the average age of flamingo species."
