News Channel 11 is in your corner to give you the tips and warning signs to make sure you do not fall victim to a scam.

In Thursday’s first report for “Scam Busters” one couple near Sulfur Springs, Tennessee received a phone call from a man claiming he was from Publishers Clearing House (PCH). The man who identified himself as John Lee and from Jamaica, New York (even though the couple says he had a thick Jamaican accent) said he was an official with PCH and congratulated the couple on winning a once in a lifetime prize. The prize? $500,000, a brand new Mercedes, and free gas for a year.

The man said that he was driving to their house with the money and car but it would be a few hours. In the meantime “John Lee” told the couple they needed to drive to a nearby WalMart or Walgreens and buy a gift card in the exact amount of $330 to send to him.

That’s when the couple knew it was a scam and hung up the phone right away.

News Channel 11 researched the Publisher’s Clearing House winning guidelines and the Better Business Bureau for some things to keep in mind if you are a PCH winner.

-PCH does not call anyone to let them know if they have won money.

    - If you win less than $600 a check will be mailed to your address.

    - An affidavit will be sent to your house if you have won $600 and $10,000 that you must fill out before you receive your money.

    - Win over $10,000? You are the lucky one who will be greeted by “Prize Patrol” with a personal delivery of the check.
