The Carolina Panthers say a surgery to fix the ankle of starting quarterback Cam Newton was successful.

According to the Panthers, Newton underwent surgery on Wednesday at Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte.

Newton had been having issues with soreness with his ankle since the end of the season, the team announced on Tuesday.

The surgery was done by Panthers team physician Robert Anderson.

"Dr. Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well," says Panthers Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Vermillion.

It is expected to take Newton about four months to recuperate.

"The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said.

Newton is prepping for his fourth season with the Panthers and has started in all of his 48 games with the team.
