American in Ukraine says he's concerned about war

Posted: Updated:

The crisis in Ukraine continues to heat up every day. On Wednesday, WBTV spoke to Petro Matiaszek. He's an American, who's been in Ukraine for almost 25 years. He has family in Charlotte, and is in regular contact with them during the uprising.

Matiaszek lives in Kiev, and when he looks out his window, he can see the same city square where thousands protested over the past few weeks. Matiaszek says he is deeply concerned over the Russian invasion of Crimea. He says the Crimean people's vote to join Russia is a hoax.

Most of our conversation centered on safety. Matiaszek says he's concerned for everyday Ukrainians.

"If there was a Russian incursion into Eastern Ukraine, they could be in Kiev in the matter of a few hours so needless to say as far as my family goes, people are making plans just in case," he said.

Matiaszek says he's prepared for Ukraine and Russia to go to war, though he's hoping that is not the case.
