Police: Woman fatally stabs boyfriend during argument

A Union County woman has been arrested after she's accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend during an argument on Tuesday.

According to officials in Monroe, 26-year-old Katondra Chantel Tillman was booked in the Union County jail just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, charged with murder.

Police responded to a 911 hang-up call from an apartment along the 2600 block of Lancelot Drive shortly after 1 p.m. and found evidence of an altercation, police told WBTV.

Officers said 38-year-old William Sturdivant had been driven to Carolinas Medical Center-Union with a stab wound to his chest by Tillman. Officers spoke with him there. Sturdivant was later flown to CMC-Main, in Charlotte, where he died.

Police said Sturdivant was stabbed by Tillman during an altercation.

"Miss Tillman did stab him, a single stab wound with a large kitchen-type knife in the upper chest," said Peter Hovanec, spokesperson for the city of Monroe.

"Our officers worked well into the night to determine exactly what happened and were able to look at the all evidence which led to the charges being filed," said Interim Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. "I appreciate the hard work of the officers as well as the assistance of the District Attorney's Office."

Police said Tillman stabbed Sturdivant at her cousin's apartment, where she was staying. They added it's difficult to say whether there was a history of domestic violence between the couple because Tillman lived multiple places. Police added before the stabbing there was never a police call made at the apartment where she was staying.

Tillman is currently being held with no bond and has a May 14 court date. This is the city's third homicide of the year.
