Charlotte business owner keeps close watch of Ukrainian crisis

As tensions continue to rise in Ukraine, many in Charlotte are paying close attention to loved ones back home.

Charlotte business owner Petro Martynyuk is a busy man, but not too busy to ignore bloody images coming out of his home country by the minute.

"We are all scared and afraid this will lead to a war. Nobody wants a war in Ukraine," he said.

He says war is very possible, after news that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Crimea a part of Russia.

WBTV joined Martynyuk for a Skype chat with his friend Serhiy Demyanchuk who lives in Kiev.

"Everybody is quite shocked. Everybody is thinking what's next and what the response should be," he said.

Demyanchuk spoke to us from his apartment, just a few hundred feet away countless demonstrations seen globally over the past few weeks.

"I was right in the middle of the whole revolution," he said.

Tensions escalated even more in Ukraine when word came that a Ukrainian soldier was shot and killed.

"Unless there is some peaceful resolution, I don't see this ending anytime soon," Martynyuk said.
