Winter Weather Advisory; Duke Hearing

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect for most of our viewing area this morning!  It's below freezing in Charlotte...and there could be ice on bridges and underpasses.  Please be careful out there this morning!  There's a possibility of sleet and freezing rain.  Travel in the higher elevations could be particularly treacherous.  We'll have complete First Alert Weather coverage beginning at 4:30 AM, so please tune in!

A federal grand jury will begin looking at evidence today in last month's massive Duke energy coal ash spill.

A fire destroyed four apartment units in Monroe last night.

A meeting is being held today to inform residents about the illegal dumping into Charlotte's sewer system.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has approved a draft bill for the annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. The decree signed by Putin is one of the steps that would formalize the annexation of Crimea.

China is now checking its territory for signs of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner that disappeared March 8. A massive search operation in the Indian Ocean and beyond has yet to find any trace of the plane. Meanwhile, China says it's looked into the backgrounds of the 154 Chinese nationals on the plane, and it's discovered no links to terrorism.

Later today, President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to 24 Army veterans who served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  The honors are being awarded after Congress ordered a review to determine whether service members of Jewish or Hispanic heritage or others had been wrongly denied the Medal of Honor because of prejudice.

North Carolina State takes on Xavier tonight in a First Four game of the NCAA tournament.

Paul Millsap scored 28 points, and the Atlanta Hawks snapped the Charlotte Bobcats' eight-game home winning with a 97-83 victory Monday night. It was Atlanta's 11th straight win over Charlotte. Kemba Walker led the Bobcats with 20 points.
