WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The owner of Banks Channel Pub and Grille in Wrightsville Beach wants to extend his front porch patio, but not everyone is excited about his expansion plans.

Damon Scarpelli said the additional seating room would be helpful to accommodate for outdoor dining. As it stands, his business only has three legitimate dining tables outside.

"We want to have people sitting outside enjoying the loop and the beautiful weather Wrightsville Beach has to offer," said Scarpelli.

The business owner wants to add a 16 ft x 16 ft extension to his outside patio.

Scarpelli said he was met with surprising opposition the first time he proposed adding the extension.

He said the homeowners neighboring his business are afraid the extension will mean more late-night drinking and noise pollution. Scarpelli, however, does not think that will not be the case.

"We just wanted to focus on the dining and that's why we proposed to just shut it down at 11 p.m.," explained Scarpelli.

Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens said it's not surprising for residents to be opposed to the expansion.

"It's popular to sit outside at the beach and it could add noise," explained Owens.  "I would think the building would shield a lot of that noise, but it's hard to say."

Scarpelli is now asking his customers to sign a form of support in favor of the expansion project.

"We've had over 100 signatures of just residents that live on Wrightsville Beach, and we're hoping to get 100 more," said Scarpelli. "Give us a chance to compete with the other places during tourist season."

The issue will be discussed at a public hearing at the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen meeting on March 19.
